Swansea City’s place in Champions League hangs in balance

Swansea City Ladies may have to forfeit their place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League after new restrictions were imposed by the Welsh Government.

Ian Owen’s side are to find out their opponents on Thursday, but now their participation in the competition hangs in the balance.

The Welsh Government announced that a two-week firebreak lockdown would be introduced from Friday 23 October to Monday 9 November.

As a result, the Cymru Premier and the Welsh Premier Women’s League now enters a hiatus.

As well as their domestic league being stopped, Swansea could now be stopped from representing Wales on the European stage.

ITV Wales sports journalist Beth Fisher tweeted: “I’m hearing that Swansea City’s Champions League match will NOT be allowed to take place under the new lockdown rules.”

However further on in her tweet, she reveals that the Football Association of Wales have contacted the Welsh Government to allow them special dispensation.

“The FAW have sent a letter to the WAG asking for special dispensation to allow it to take place.”

As part of the firebreak lockdown, training even at an ‘elite’ level will not be permitted, which will further affect Swansea’s preparations.

They have so far played two league games this season and had a training session on Sunday in the absence of a League Cup match.
