Who is Josh Sheehan? The latest call-up to the Welsh national team

Wales have named Newport County ace Josh Sheehan in the Wales squad for the upcoming camp.

Recently, Wales have been no stranger to giving an opportunity to uncapped players during his tenure at the Cardiff City Stadium.

In the absence of Ryan Giggs, Robert Page will take charge of Wales’ triple-header later this month.

Arguably the biggest talking point from the squad announcement is the inclusion of Newport County magician Josh Sheehan.

Wales host the USA in a friendly before the closing Nations League fixtures against Finland and the Republic of Ireland later this month as they hope to top the group.

Sheehan has recently become a stonewall-starter for the Exiles who have started this season promisingly.

After opening his account for the season on Tuesday night, he will hope to make his debut this month.

So, who is Josh Sheehan?

Sheehan is a central midfielder who came through the ranks at Swansea City’s academy.

Having been with the Swans since the age of 10, Sheehan made a name for himself with a long-range screamer against Cardiff City in the FAW Wales Youth Cup aged 18.

After two loan spells with Yeovil Town, Sheehan signed on loan for Newport County in 2016/17 before signing permanently the following summer. He’s gone on to make a staggering 141 appearances for the County since.

The 25-year-old has had paramount influence for Newport in the last few seasons, having played every minute of this season’s stellar start to the league so far.

Sheehan’s creativity and passing ability paired with his admirable work-rate mean he can play at attacking-midfield or in a deeper box-to-box role.

The Pembrey-born midfielder has been capped 12 times at Wales under-21 level, with his last appearance in a Wales shirt coming in September 2016.

Sheehan won’t be too unfamiliar with the current squad either as he’s played alongside Tom Lockyer, Joe Rodon, Daniel James and Harry Wilson at youth-level.

Speaking to South Wales Argus in December last year, he said ‘’You have dreams to play for your country and I’m not going to give up on that.

‘’I’m going to keep going until I get to my goal.’’

Wales’ friendly against USA could be the perfect opportunity for Sheehan to make his debut.
