Connah’s Quay kept within touching distance of league leaders The New Saints with a 3-1 victory over Barry Town United at Deeside Stadium in the JD Cymru Premier.
Andy Morrison’s side came from behind to inflict defeat on Barry, who are winless in six matches now.
Jordan Cotterill opened the scoring for Barry early on but Mike Wilde cancelled out his effort, before Declan Poole gave the hosts a first-half lead. Aeron Edwards added a third goal in the second-half to ensure the victory.
The game was an entertaining one with both sides attacking but ultimately the defending champions came out on top.
Barry, however, proved the old adage of being most vulnerable after they’ve just scored right as they let slip of their lead immediately.
Cotterill’s opener was undone by a quick-witted finish from Wilde, who deserved praise for his strikers instincts.
Priestley Farquharson’s long throw found Wilde who flicked the ball to George Horan and the Nomads skipper returned the favour to the front-man who controlled the ball in the air with his right foot before touching his shot past Mike Lewis with his left.
The Nomads almost scored from a free-kick as Aeron Edwards’ header went into the arms of Lewis after Poole’s cross.
Connah’s Quay were creating a number of opportunities as Danny Harrison was up next to challenge Lewis with a curled effort.
The hosts did take the lead and it came from Poole who drove an effort from inside the box after picking up from Danny Davies’ deflected cross.
On the hour mark, the Nomads went from defence to attack as they almost increased their lead as Danny Davies went on a marauding run but Lewis blocked the midfielders shot well with his legs.
Davies’ quick feet eventually resulted in a third Nomads goal and a third for Aeron Edwards. Davies’ left-footed cross found the midfielder and his header hit the underside of the crossbar and cannoned in.
The third goal took the sting out of Barry and it was the Nomads who looked likelier to score.
Jay Owen’s corner found substitute Aron Williams well but the former Buckley man saw his header saved by Lewis.
Barry almost caused the Nomads a problem late on as Chris Hugh’s free-kick met the head of Luke Cooper who rattled the post.
