Shane Sutton: Former Robins skipper returns to Newtown

Newtown have announced the signing of centre-back Shane Sutton from Vanarama National League North outfit Telford United.

Sutton, 31, re-joins the Robins having been away for three years after he left the club for the New Bucks Head in 2017.

The defender, who joined the club from Shrewsbury Town in 2007, captain of the Newtown side that won the Cymru Premier European play-off in 2015.

The Robins went on to progress in the Europa League first-round qualifier, defeating Valletta over two legs, facing Danish giants Copenhagen as a result.

“It’s exciting to be back and I’m ready for a fresh challenge,” Sutton said upon his return to the Powys based side.

“I know the core of the squad from when I was previously here, and a few of the other members of the team. I’ve been watching the games and have been really impressed with the players we’ve got in the squad.

“First and foremost, the club needs to remain in the Welsh Premier League next season, so I hope I can play a part in that”.

Sutton bolsters a Newtown defence that have conceded 27 goals so far this campaign, averaging 1.8 goals conceded per game.

The defender will make his second debut for the club when the Cymru Premier resumes, with play suspended over the lockdown period.
