Josh Sheehan: Newport County reluctant to let star leave this January

Newport County boss Michael Flynn has said the club would rather Josh Sheehan leave for free in the summer than in this window.

Flynn has come out in the last week saying they will not accept any offers for Sheehan this month. The only way he will be leaving South Wales in the near future is if his buyout clause is met.

With his contract up in the summer, the County boss is hoping Sheehan will remain at the club this season to help his side go up.

Flynns said: “Unless somebody triggers his buyout then there is no point, especially the later the window goes because it would be harder and harder to get that right player in,”

“Josh is a fantastic player and will be one that will be here until the end of the season unless something happens in the next two weeks.

“He will get his chance of being a free agent and having a look at what comes up, but that’s not ruling out that if we go up to League One we get to keep him.”

The midfielder has been a focal point in a successful Newport side this term, which earned him a first Wales call-up and cap under Rob Page in November.

The Welsh international has been at the club permanently since January 2018 after a loan spell from Swansea City the season previous and has found much success playing in front of the back four in the last few campaigns.

Losing Josh Sheehan would deal a massive blow down at Rodney Parade with duo Scott Twine and Brandon Cooper both leaving at the start of January, being recalled by their parent clubs.

Sheehan turns 26 in March and should Newport not gain the ultimate goal of promotion come May, their midfield maestro may be free to walk out and move higher up the pyramid to pastures new.
