Priestley Farquharson has expressed his delight after signing for League Two outfit Newport County.
The defender has joined the Exiles from Cymru Premier champions Connah’s Quay Nomads, signing for an undisclosed fee on a two-and-a-half year contract.
During his time at the Nomads, Farquharson was named 2019/2020 Young Player of the Year, having secured a league and Nathaniel MG Cup double.
“I’m delighted to have signed,” he said. “I can’t wait to get started because I want to try and help get promotion.
“I just want to get my feet flat on the ground and keep going. I just can’t wait to get started and I’m happy to be here.
“It all came about by the gaffer and Connah’s Quay, they know each other. He had been watching me in the Champions League and Europa League. It all started from there.
“That’s when he seen me and he liked my ability and that’s how it happened, now I’m delighted to be here.
“I just want to offer, to my ability, help to the defence, no goals, if you don’t concede, you don’t lose games, at least you get a point. I just want to help be solid at the back and help us push and get that promotion.”
Farquharson joined Connah’s Quay Nomads in Hayes and Yeading United in January 2019 and was an instant hit at the Deeside Stadium.
The defender captained the Nomads in both the Champions League and Europa League this season.
After making the step-up to League Two, Farquharson holds his time in the Cymru Premier in high regard.
“Connah’s Quay’s been great for me, that helped develop me into a man,” he insisted.
“The gaffer there, Andy Morrison, has helped me a lot, always nurturing me, helping me be a better player and Jamie Insall, who I live with, has always been a big influence for me. He’s always tried to help me and push me.
“Connah’s Quay have helped me improve to the player I am now, hopefully I can keep improving here.
“It was a great double, the first time Connah’s Quay have won. I was glad to be a part of it and hopefully I can get promotion here and carry on the winning trend.”
The former Nomad also believes his time in the Cymru Premier will stand him in good stead to make the step-up to the Football League.
“There’s good teams there like Barry and TNS and playing Champions League, you can’t get any better than that really.
“The level here is a bit different to the league I was in before, but I know I’m going to be fine in this league, I can’t wait.
I’m ready, I didn’t want to go too early. The gaffer has seen that I’m there and I’m ready, there aren’t going to be any problems, I’ll be just fine.”
Farquharson joins a Newport County side with high hopes of promotion this season.
The Exiles are currently fifth in the League Two table, trailing league leaders Cambridge United by two points having played two games fewer.
Newport’s newest recruit believes he can to Michael Flynn’s defence, who have conceded 25 goals in 23 league games this season, an average of 1.09 per game.
“At the club, it’s mainly clean sheets. Until the end of the season, I want at least 75% clean sheets.
“As a defender, that’s my main job. Hopefully, I can get a few goals as well, win us some games, that’s my aim personally.
“For the team, promotion is the biggest aim.”
