Pontypridd Town snap up Barry stalwart Paul Morgan

Pontypridd Town have moved to sign Barry Town United stalwart Paul Morgan.

The 26-year-old’s new club was announced following his departure from Jenner Park earlier this week.

Morgan is linking up with former Barry players such as Drew Fahiya, James Saddler and Tyrrell Webbe.

“Thanks to everyone at Barry Town, it was an honour to put the shirt on every week for so long,” said Morgan on a social media post, following his exit from the Cymru Premier side.

Morgan began his career at Newport County’s academy before joining Barry in August 2012. He was part of the Barry squad who reached the Welsh Cup semi-finals in 2013.

The club were withdrawn from the Welsh League weeks later but the defender stuck with his local team. He played a part in Barry’s revival in which they climbed up from the fourth tier to the top flight.

In total, he made 184 appearances for Barry including many in the top flight. He also played in the Europa League preliminary round in Barry’s defeat to Cliftonville.

His performances saw him merit the Young Player of the Season award in consecutive seasons in 2014 and 2015.

Wishing the long-servant well with his club, Barry manager Gavin Chesterfield said: “Paul is an unbelievable bloke and he can be proud of everything he’s achieved at the football club. Numerous trophies, numerous highlights and he’s gone all the way through the divisions with us.

“It’s disappointing to see him move on, but he deserves to play football and he’s got a good opportunity to do that so I wish him nothing but the best.

“I think the world of him and I know how much he loves the club. The boys will miss him because he’s a big part of our changing room, but I know he won’t be a stranger.”
