FAW provide update on possible resumption of WPWL season

The Football Association of Wales has provided an update on the current situation for Women’s domestic football.

A meeting took place between the National League Board and both the Cup and Community Game Board.

The FAW remains hopeful that the Welsh Premier Women’s League will continue under ‘elite’ status conditions. A start date of the 5 March has been pencilled in with the league season ending on 31 May.

The Welsh Premier Women’s League Cup which has almost concluded its group stage fixtures will hopefully resume from 23 March and will finish on the 23 May.

A re-formatted FAW Women’s Cup has also been mooted with the nine current WPWL teams entering it.

It was hopeful that all teams who entered would be able to participate however current guidelines do not allow for that.

The FAW Girl’s Cup, which consists of players under the age of 16, is hopeful of being played, however a further meeting in March will take place to decide.

Thirty-three clubs entered this year’s competition and were due to play in January, however the COVID-19 situation worsened.

All the listed possibilities above will be dependent like in the men’s game on the Welsh Government lowering their Alert Level or Sport Wales reinstating their elite status.

For other ladies and Women’s clubs in Wales, football below the Welsh Premier Women’s League has been cancelled.
