Wales set to be without David Brooks after sustaining ankle injury

Wales are likely to be without playmaker David Brooks for their World Cup qualifiers against Belgium and the Czech Republic next month.

An ankle injury looks set to keep the 23-year-old for up to five weeks, which will all but guarantee his absence in Wales’ next three fixtures.

Despite a few knock-backs at the beginning of the term, the midfielder swiftly regained his spot as a vital first team member, featuring in 25 consecutive matches before his latest injury, scoring three times and assisting five goals.

Speaking to the Bournemouth Echo, head coach Jonathan Woodgate said “he went over on his ankle in training on Friday I think it was.

“We got a scan on it and I think he’s going to be out for four to five weeks, which isn’t great because he’s a valuable player at the football club.”

After wowing Premier League audiences in his debut campaign, Brooks has sustained a number of injuries. Last season, the former Manchester City academy player was sidelined for the best part of a year following a serious ankle injury against Brentford in the build up to the 2019/20 campaign, which resulted in two operations.

Thankfully for Brooks, the injury is on the opposite ankle to the one that plagued him last year, although it still comes as a significant blow for both club and country.

Bournemouth, who have won only two of their last ten outings, are seeing their grip on the final playoff spot loosened by the day, with a resurgent Cardiff City breathing down their necks.

Brooks also an important figure on the International front, having scored in their 1-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in November, which helped guide them to promotion in the UEFA Nations League.
