Manchester City chasing The New Saints for European winning record

Manchester City and The New Saints are set to do battle once again as the Citizens hope to claim the longest winning streak in Europe.

In 2003, the Citizens beat TNS 7-0 in a UEFA Cup over two legs with current Saints boss Scott Ruscoe part of the side which narrowly lost 2-0 at the Millennium Stadium.

Now in a different stratosphere as a team who dine at the top table of Europe’s elite, Pep Guardiola’s side are challenging the Oswestry side for their record.

TNS hold the record for the longest winning run after winning 27 games in all competitions in the 2016/17 season. Their run was brought to an end by Newtown, who held them to a 3-3 draw.

They had held the world record, however in 2019 they were displaced by Corinthians Women, who went one further and won 28 in a row.

Now their record in Europe could be at risk, owing to the terrific form of Manchester City, who have now won their last 14 league matches, and 20 in all competitions.

For Man City to equal TNS’ record, they would have to win their next seven matches. They host Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium this evening.

Man City of course are competing in the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Premier League, as well as the final of the Carabao Cup.

TNS meanwhile were competing in the Cymru Premier, Nathaniel MG Cup, Scottish Challenge Cup and the Welsh Cup at the time with their record.
