Connah’s Quay Nomads 2-0 Haverfordwest County: Wilde nets 200th Welsh top flight goal in clinical win
Mike Wilde reached 200 goals in Welsh top-flight matches as he netted against Haverfordwest County for Connah’s Quay.
Wilde’s landmark goal and a first-half effort from captain George Horan extend the Nomads’ unbeaten run to thirteen matches.
Haverfordwest drop out of the top six after today’s result, as Caernarfon Town move into sixth after beating Bala Town.
The Nomads were dominant right from the off. The home side controlled the game with most of the possession, aiming to cause problems from crosses. Their aerial threat was a massive factor in their victory at the Deeside Stadium this afternoon.
A first chance for the Nomads came in the seventh minute. New signing Neil Danns got his head to an Aron Williams cross, but couldn’t quite direct it on target, going just over the bar.
Shouts for a penalty came as Wilde fell to the ground following a cross from the right-hand side. Referee Rob Jenkins saw no wrong-doing.
Michael Wilde had another chance but he was stretching and couldn’t quite get a strong connection on the effort.
Danny Davies was denied by a fantastic Matt Turner save. His curling effort from the left-hand side of the box, was saved by Turner and sent out for a corner.
The quality of Jazz Richards was shown as he prevented Danny Davies from entering the box with a fine sliding tackle.
George Horan headed home from an Aron Williams corner, just before half time, to give the Nomads the lead. This goal didn’t come without controversy though, as Haverfordwest were visibly fuming that the goal had not been disallowed.
Haverfordwest were forced into subbing their Matt Turner at half time, following an injury suffered at the end of the first half. Wojciech Gajda came on in the Leeds United loanee’s place.
The Nomads doubled their lead as Michael Wilde netted his 200th Cymru Premier goal. Some great play from Curran on the right side saw his square ball met by Wilde in the middle.
Another chance came for Horan but his headed effort went well wide of the post.
Gajda was forced into making a brilliant one on one save. Morris dribbled passed a Haverfordwest defender, and set himself in on goal, only for Gajda to deny him.
The Nomads move six points clear at the top of the table following today’s result. They next face Newtown in their last Phase One fixture, as they travel to Latham Park on April 2.
