Cyncoed Ladies 3-1 Briton Ferry Llansawel: Millie Jones stars in Mighty Oaks victory

New Cyncoed Ladies manager Charlie Mitchell got his tenure off to the perfect start with a 3–1 victory over Briton Ferry Llansawel at the USW Sports Park.

First-half goals from Millie Jones and Megan Saunders saw the Mighty Oaks race to a two-goal lead, only for Chelsea Deacon to reduce the deficit.

Striker Alison Witts’ second-half header to restore the two-goal lead proved to be decisive for Mitchell’s side.

The victory sees the Mighty Oaks rise up to fourth in the Welsh Premier Women’s League table.

Briton Ferry Llansawel, who continued to battle tirelessly throughout, succumbed to their fifth defeat of the season.

Cyncoed came out of the blocks quickly and took the lead in the opening five minutes.

A corner was cleared out to Millie Jones, who has impressed for the Mighty Oaks this season; the attacker fired a superb effort home from distance to take an early lead.

Mitchell’s side continued their swift start as they doubled their lead in the first fifteen minutes.

Jones was again involved, as she found Megan Saunders in space to fire past Courteney Young in the Briton Ferry Llansawel goal.

Despite a fast start from the hosts, Isaac Berry’s side continued to battle well, with strikers Caitlin Owen and Chelsea Deacon working tirelessly.

Deacon got her reward as Briton Ferry Llansawel halved the deficit just after the half-hour mark.

The striker was played through and finished neatly past Maisie Jones in a positive spell of sustained pressure from the visitors.

With the half-time score poised at 2-1, the visitors got themselves back into the contest after a strong start from Cyncoed.

Much like the first-half, Mitchell’s side imposed themselves early on and restored their two-goal lead in the opening five minutes of the second period.

Striker Alison Witts headed powerfully home from a corner to record her fourth goal in all competitions so far this campaign.

The Mighty Oaks continued to make chances, as a brilliant run from her own half by Rhianne Oakley ended in her forcing a save out of Young.

A golden opportunity fell to Cyncoed’s Seren Watkins, as she was found free in the box by substitute Ellie Gunney, but couldn’t quite turn the ball home.

Despite the visitors’ best efforts to get back into the game, Witts’ second-half header sealed the three points for the Mighty Oaks.

Cyncoed Ladies will be looking to make it back-to-back wins as they host Abergavenny Women on Tuesday night, while Briton Ferry Llansawel welcome Port Talbot Town in their next fixture.
