Caernarfon Town 1-6 Connah’s Quay: Super-six Nomads punish slacking Caernarfon
Connah’s Quay bounced back to winning ways with a thumping 6-1 victory over Caernarfon Town at The Oval.
A brace from Danny Davies, coupled with goals from Mike Wilde, Declan Poole, George Horan, and an own goal from Cai Jones as Andy Morrison’s men proved too hot to handle for the Cofis.
The result means it’s three defeats in a row for Caernarfon now and after what seemed a bad injury for goalkeeper Josh Tibbetts, it proved to be a rotten night for Huw Griffiths as they lost at home for the second time in three days.
Connah’s Quay remain behind TNS on the virtue of goal difference meanwhile Caernarfon remain six points fifth-placed Penybont.
Both sides started the game well with Caernarfon just edging the early goings, however, it was the Deesiders who took the lead.
After a counter-attack from a corner, the ball found its way to Neil Danns who’s perfectly timed pass found Declan Poole who finished coolly past Tibbetts.
It didn’t take long for the home side to even things up and they equalized after Jake Bickerstaff caused chaos in the away side defence and his strike deflected in off John Disney and we had a level game.
Just after the half-hour mark Connah’s Quay were back in the lead and the scorer of the first goal Declan Poole turned creator for the second as his cross from the right-hand side found the head of Mike Wilde and the champions were back in the lead.
Neither side could find a goal before half-time and at the break, Andy Morrison’s men led had a slender advantage and Caernarfon were very much so still in with a chance.
The second half started similar to the first, with plenty of energy from both sides but it was Connah’s Quay who scored the vital third goal.
A cheap free-kick was conceded by the home side and Kris Owens’ delivery was knocked past his own keeper by Caernarfon forward Cai Jones and from that, the Canaries heads very much dropped and Connah’s Quay knew they were there for the taking.
Caernarfon had a glimmer through Mike Hayes but his long range strike did not trouble Oliver Byrne in the visitors goal and soon after it was game over.
Daniel Davies scored from the edge of the area with a deflected volley after the home side had failed to clear from a cross.
Caernarfon brought on Darren Thomas and Sam Jones to change things but unfortunately for Huw Griffiths, they didn’t have much of an impact and soon after their arrival, Connah’s Quay made it five.
The fifth was scored by captain George Horan who had stayed up after a corner and he beat Josh Tibbetts at the far post to score, unfortunately in the aftermath, Tibbetts looked to have suffered a nasty injury to his leg and had to be stretchered off and was replaced by Tyler French.
Soon after the clock struck 90, it was 6-1 and it was the impressive Danny Davies who netted his second of the game with a close-range finish and Saturday’s defeat was a distant memory for the Deesiders.
Saturday sees Connah’s Quay host Barry Town United who themselves shipped six to The New Saints tonight, while Caernarfon travel to Maes Tegid to take on Bala Town who beat Penybont by the odd goal in five.
Connah’s Quay proved that their title charge is back on track with a great performance tonight while Caernarfon will want to forget about tonight’s game in a hurry.
