Newtown 5-0 Cefn Druids: Five-star Robins inflict further damage on sloppy Druids

It was a demolition derby as goals from Newtown as goals from Shane Sutton, Jordan Evans, Nick Rushton and James Davies sent the Druids back to Wrexham empty handed.

It didn’t take long for the first player to end up in the referee’s book as James O’Neill was booked within the first minute after a crunching tackle on Charley Edge.

Newtown were the dominant side at the start of the game, and this appeared to be the case for the whole 90 minutes. The hosts we awarded a free kick early on the game but failed to do anything with it as the ball was sent rocketing into the middle of the wall.

Strangely enough and despite the final score, Druids were the first to have a chance on goal. A cross which was goal bound deflected off of a Newtown man and was sent over the crossbar. A big let off for Chris Hughes’ side.

This was a wake up call for the hosts though. Tricky winger Mwandwe got past the Druids defence all by himself, but the shot was poor and the ball rolled out for a Druids goal kick.

Ofori was given a good chance to open the scoring in the 25th minutes but like Mwandwe, he saw his shot roll wide of the post.

The hosts finally opened the scoring after half and hour, returning fan favourite Shane Sutton headed the ball past Michael Jones to give Newtown a well deserved lead.

It didn’t take long for the Robins to grab their second as a long range free kick from specialist Jordan Evans found the bottom corner to double their lead.

The second half started as the first did as Newtown dominated possession.

Druids looked only slightly sharper, their second major chance of the game deflected off the Newtown defence for a corner, which was dealt with easy by the tightly knit Robins.

Tyrone Ofori nearly got Newtown their third of this game but his powerful strike rocketed off the crossbar.

Newtown were given a free kick which was wasted, fired right into the Cefn Druids wall, but a resulting shot on goal was caught by Dave Jones by his fingertips! He did very well to keep the ball in his hands.

The third goal came after a moment a madness, a missed chance and a hit off the crossbar saw the ball land on the goal line which was tapped home by Nick Rushton.

Druids day went from bad to worse, not only were they 3-0 down at one point, but they were also taken down to ten men after Iwan Cartwright was shown a straight red and sent for an early shower.

Two goals at the end of the game, Jordan Evans with his second and James Davies with a stoppage time winner saw the hosts complete a dominant 5-0 win.
