Former Newtown loanee Ryan Sears released by Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town have included Welsh defender Ryan Sears in their summer clear-out as Steve Cotterill stamps his authority on the squad.

Sears had been at the New Meadow since 2011 after joining their youth team and also had loan spells with his hometown club Newtown and AFC Telford United.

At his loan spell with the Robins, he made 35 appearances across all competitions and missed just one league fixture. He was later voted the club’s Players Player of the Season.

As he broke through to the Shrewsbury first team however a season later, his progress at the club was hampered after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury which sidelined him for a majority of the 2019/20 season.

The 22-year-old made 13 competitive senior appearances for the Shropshire outfit before his release earlier this week.

“Well after 10 years with this club my time has come to an end,” said Sears on Twitter.

“Thank you to all the staff and players who have helped me develop as a player and thank you to the fans who have supported me all these years. Time for the next chapter.”

Former Wales international, David Edwards, who hinted at retirement in January was also amongst the list of out-of-contract players who will not be offered a new contract.

Edwards, who rejoined Shrewsbury for a second spell in 2019, featured 79 times for the club.

The 35-year-old has since combined his playing career with punditry roles with Sky Sports, commentating on numerous Wales international matches
