Wrexham Women one of 16 clubs admitted to Tier Two of Welsh Women’s football

The Football Association of Wales have announced the makeup of their new pyramid structure for Welsh Women’s football.

A list of 33 applicants have been whittled down to 24 teams who will now enter the new system which will come into effect for the 2021/22 season.

Sixteen clubs have been welcomed to the new Tier Two leagues which will be split into a North and South section with eight teams in each.

As a result of their demotion from the Welsh Premier Women’s League, Abergavenny Women, Briton Ferry Llansawel Ladies, and Cascade Ladies have taken three spots in the Southern section of the second Tier.

They will be joined by Caldicot Town, Cardiff Bluebelles, Merthyr Town, Talycopa and Swansea University.

Wrexham, who are owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, take their place in the Northern section with £50,000 worth of investment earmarked by the pair.

Commenting on their admission, Wrexham said: “We are pleased to announce that we have been selected to compete in the new FAW Women’s Tier 2 North for the 21/22 season. We have huge ambitions for this team and the female section of the club over the next few years.”

Joining the Dragons in the North is FAW Women’s Cup semi-finalists Connah’s Quay, as well as Airbus UK, Bethel, Llanfair and Llandudno, who were playing at the same level last season.

Denbigh Town and Pwllheli along with Wrexham have seen themselves earn a promotion to a higher division.

All clubs admitted will join a reformatted League Cup competition that will see them play in a preliminary round against one another. The official name of the league will be announced by the FAW in August.
