David Edwards joins Bala Town in a major coup for Lakesiders

Former Wales midfielder Dave Edwards has put pen-to-paper on a deal with Bala Town after they fended off interest from other clubs.

The 35-year-old joins the Lakesiders after his release from Shrewsbury Town earlier this year. It is understood that Bala beat off rivals Newtown to secure his signature.

He becomes the third member of Wales’ EURO 2016 squad to join the Cymru Premier after both David Cotterill and Jazz Richards joined Barry Town and Haverfordwest County, respectively.

Commenting on the major coup, manager Colin Caton said: “To get him on board is absolutely fantastic, he’s played with Chris Venables before (During their time at Shrewsbury Town) and he knows a couple of the lads like Antony Kay who he’s played against in the leagues.

He was a pleasure to deal with, and he’s going to add so much to us as a player, as a person, and his knowledge, and his experience around the dressing room is going to be second to none.

“It’s a great capture for us and a pleasure to have him joining the club.”

Edwards made almost 600 appearances in a footballing career that has spanned almost twenty years.

He played for boyhood town team Shrewsbury Town, helping them achieve Football League status, before playing for Luton for a season.

The Pontesbury-born midfielder then spent ten years at Wolverhampton Wanderers, playing in the top three divisions of English football.

He since moved on from Molineux and had a two-season stay at Reading before joining Shrewsbury for a second time.

As well as his club credentials, Edwards, who qualifies for Wales through his Welshpool-based father, made 43 appearances for Cymru, featuring at EURO 2016.

As well as an incoming for Bala, the club have also seen Andrew Burns and Henry Jones depart Maes Tegid.
