FAW Elite Futsal League season to take place over three-days

The 2020/21 FAW Elite Futsal League season is to take place over three days and will be housed at the House of Sport in Cardiff.

As a result of the continuing effects of the coronavirus wreaking havoc on sporting schedules, the Football Association of Wales has decided to host a tournament to decide Wales’ representative in the UEFA Champions League.

Four teams from the North and four from the South will compete this weekend to claim the ultimate prize as the national champion of Wales in Futsal. In the two regional divisions, the top side from each conference will face each other in a final on Sunday.

The 2019/20 campaign was curtailed with Swansea University being crowned champions on a points-per-game basis.

They have entered the competition and will defend their crown against FTSL Premier Futsal Club, Futsal Club Cardiff, and the University of South Wales.

In the North, it is much change with only second-placed Luso Cymru taking part in the tournament. They will be joined by the newly formed FC United of Wrexham, as well as PF Cymru and Cefn Druids FC.

KS Hussars, Wrexham Glyndwr, Border Futsal, The New Saints, Newport United, Futsal Caerdydd Dreigiau, Inter Cardiff, Baglan, and Merthyr Town are all absent from this seasons edition.

A number of Wales internationals could be on show over the course of the three day event in what is certain to be an action-packed few days.

Rico Zulkarnain, manager of FTSL Club, is one of only two professional Welsh futsal players and could feature for the Newport-based side.

Adam Orme and Warren Hudson, who both coach Swansea University, may also feature in the tournament.

Liam Andrews, president of Great Britain’s Futsal Association, meanwhile has been drafted in as a short-term Director of Futsal for FC United of Wrexham.
