PF Cymru 1-7 Luso Cymru: Experience prevails as Portuguese outfit come out on top

Luso Cymru kicked off their FAW Elite Futsal League campaign with a 7-1 victory over PF Cymru at the House of Sport.

Elson Bassangue was the star man for last season’s runners-up in the North section, scoring four goals.

Edgar Lima meanwhile scored a brace, as well as a solo goal from Pedro Alves.

Josh Beck scored a consolation goal for Cymru, who were made up mainly of players under the age of 20.

Luso had the first chance of the game as Pedro Alves took aim from the right-hand side but his effort went wide of the target.

Two minutes into the game brought the first goal. A low ball across the PF Cymru box was tapped in by Elson Basangue to gift Luso an early lead.

Luso kept the pressure on as Hugo Gomes saw his shot go wide after Elson had robbed a defender to set him up. That was quickly followed by a quick kick in that give Elson a chance to shoot but Owen Smith made the save.

PF Cymru had the chance on the counter-attack as Iwan Roberts won the ball and forced Paulo Correia into action.

Luso were working the ball around the court looking to create openings in PF Cymru defence. Smith saved again from an effort from Elson and Luke Edwards-Phelan made a great tackle to stop Alves from breaking through.

PF Cymru were trying to counter but were struggling to find the final pass as they hit a three-on-one breakaway.

Luso scored their second after eight minutes as Lima finished a free-flowing passing move as Luso stretched the PF Cymru defence.

Lima was having a fine spell of attacking play. Moments after his goal he came close again as his free kick came back off the post.

Soon after Lima did have his second. Ten minutes into the half he took the ball out on the right and lifted the ball over the keeper from an acute angle.

PF Cymru started to settle and Josh Adams tried a shot from distance but it went wide.

The young PF Cymru side soon racked up five fouls meaning they would gift Luso a free shot for their next one.

The fouls proved costly soon after as Osian Roberts committed another foul. Luso was given a free shot while Roberts was given a yellow card.

Hugo Tavares stepped up for the free shot but Smith produced a fine save to deny him.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Luso putting pressure onto their opponent’s.

Alves played a one-two with Lima before shooting into the side netting. He followed this with a shot from out wide again forcing Smith into a save.

Five minutes into the half and Luso found the net again. Elson quickest to react after Smith saved Lima’s shot.

PF Cymru were being restricted to efforts from distance. Jakub Bryla hitting a shot straight at Tiago Ribeiro and Dafydd Paynter shooting wide.

Soon as PF Cymru looked like they getting into the game and a three-minute blitz from Luso getting three goals.

Elson struck first with a powerful shot from wide on the left on 27 minutes. Alves then found himself one on one with Smith. Smith did well to stop his first effort but Alves was first to the loose ball to tap home. Elson then had his fourth as he skipped past a defender out wide the fired a low powerful drive into the bottom corner of the goal.

PF Cymru kept working hard and looking for a goal which they got on 32 minutes. Josh Beck was played in wide on the right and he lifted the ball over the keeper.

Luso will next face FC United of Wrexham on Sunday before what will likely be the deciding game of the North Group against Cefn Druids. PF Cymru will face a tough task in their next match as they face Cefn Druids. (Cefn Druids won their opener 29-0). They follow that up with a meeting against FC United of Wrexham.
