Mark Pike leaves Port Talbot on eve of new competitive season

Port Talbot Town and manager Mark Pike have parted company on the eve of the new competitive season.

The Cymru South side are due to play Swansea University in the first round of the Nathaniel MG Cup on Saturday, but will be without Pike in the dugout.

Their league campaign is due to begin next week when local rivals Trefelin BGC arrive at Victoria Road for the first Derby between the two at a second-tier level.

An integral part of the club after overseeing the academy and youth structure, Pike was appointed as manager back in June 2018, replacing Cortez Belle.

He guided Port Talbot to a 13th placed finish, outside of the relegation zone, however, the club were relegated to the third tier of Welsh football for failing to attain the Tier Two licence.

At the first attempt though, he led them to promotion, finishing third in the curtailed 2019/20 season.

Pike did manage one competitive match last year, losing to Cambrian & Clydach Vale on penalties. However, like many clubs, they have been deprived of action.

Confirming his departure, the club issued a brief statement reading: “Port Talbot Town Football Club can confirm that Mark Pike has this week resigned from his position as first-team manager.

A recruitment process for a new manager is already underway and the club will make a further announcement in due course.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to Mark for his longstanding contribution to the club for many years and wish him the very best for the future.

“An association of over 30 years with Port Talbot Town came to an end on Tuesday,” announced the Steelmen boss on his Twitter.

“I am privileged to have so many great memories. I would like to thank all the Port Talbot Town supporters for their loyal support, not forgetting a great playing group and staff I leave behind. I am looking forward to the next chapter.”

In response, one of Port Talbot’s players, Jackson Hall said: “It has been an absolute pleasure gaffer, top man to work with, good luck with everything boss.

“Great manager and an even better bloke. Thank you for giving me the opportunity,” added another first-team player in Jack Underwood.
