Charlton Athletic Women sign Anna Filbey as Ella Powell leaves for Bristol City

Charlton Athletic Women have been in a Wales international merry-go-round with Anna Filbey signing as Ella Powell departs for Bristol City.

Powell will come face to face with Filbey and her former club in October and January in FA Championship action after Bristol City’s relegation.

Filbey spent the back end of last season on loan at Celtic and was released from Tottenham Hotspur back in May.

The midfielder heads to the Valley to link up with her former manager Karen Hills, with the pair-winning promotion to the WSL with Spurs back in 2019.

Despite hailing from Hillingdon, the 21-year-old has two caps for Wales featuring in their Euro qualifying campaign against Belarus and Norway. She also featured for England at youth level in the under 17’s and 19’s setups.

Having moved to South London, Filbey told Charlton Athletic Women: “I’m really happy to have joined Charlton.

“I believe that this is the best environment for me on and off the pitch. I trust Karen and Riteesh to develop me and help me really kick on as a player.

“I’m really excited to see what we as a team can achieve this season because I’ve loved every minute so far.”

The full Addicks Women’s squad is set to be announced at an open training session at the Valley tomorrow.

Moving away from the capital is another Wales international in the form of Ella Powell. The Cardiff-born attacker has joined Lauren Smith’s Robins as their fifth signing of the summer.

With two caps for Cymru as well, Powell has vast experience in the FA Championship having played for Lewes in the second tier before a move to Charlton at the start of last season.

The 21-year-old also spent time across the pond. In her younger years, Powell played NCCA college football with the Georgia State Panthers before a return to the U.K two years ago.

Speaking to Bristol City upon her arrival, Powell stated: “I’m excited for a new challenge in my career at Bristol City,”

“I’ve worked with Lauren (Smith) before in the national team set-up, which was a huge draw in me coming to the club and I’m eager to grow and develop as a player under her this season.

“I’m determined to kick on this year on the pitch and establish myself as a key member of the squad, with the hope my performances at club level for Bristol City will lead to more international caps with Wales.”
