Hull City are poised to sign Wales midfielder Matt Smith from Premier League champions Manchester City according to reports.
Repots from Hull Live say that the 21-year-old, who was part of Wales’ EURO 2020 squad could make the move to Humberside shorty.
The Tigers are expected to complete the signing in time for their opening game of the season when the Tigers travel to Deepdale to face Preston North End.
Following his time at Doncaster Rovers where Smith impressed, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola would like to see the midfielder play in the Championship.
The young midfielder has had experience in the Championship before with Queens Park Rangers and Charlton Athletic having played 10 times for both clubs in the 2019-20 season.
Smith was absent from Manchester City’s friendly with newly-promoted Championship side Blackpool on Tuesday night and it’s believed the deal will be done in the next 48 hours.
The Hull City kept his cards close to his chest when almost revealing the identity of the player when asked by the local radio station, Hull Live understands it will be Smith who McCann was talking about.
“I don’t speculate on things like that, there have been so many reports this summer,” said McCann on BBC Humberside when asked about Hull Live’s report.
“We keep our business very quiet and try to do it in the background.”
“I’ve mentioned before we are trying to add to the group, particularly in the midfield area and we are working very, very hard behind the scenes to do that.”
“We are very close, I have to tell you that, we are very closed on bringing one in, but until the I’s are dotted and t’s crossed, I never like to get too carried away.”
