Carmarthen’s winless start to the season continued as they were held to a goalless draw with Taffs Well.
The Old Goal have yet to taste victory in the Cymru South after their relegation and the draw with the Wellmen means their search goes on.
Carmarthen fielded new signing Luke Borrelli, but he was unable to inspire the Carmarthenshire club to any glory.
Taffs Well meanwhile earn a second impressive result on the road, adding a point to the win they earned against Ammanford.
Both sides had a flurry of chances in the opening 15 minutes. Former TNS winger David Lyon threatened Carmarthen’s defence with a mazy run to the edge of the box, but his shot failed to clear through the bodies of the Carmarthen defence.
Liam Thomas then had the best chance of the game after just seven minutes. A mix-up in the Taff’s Well defence led to the ball bouncing over goalkeeper Eddie King’s head, and Liam Thomas picked it up with an open goal ahead of him. However, his shot from the edge of the six-yard box cannoned back off the post.
Taff’s Well then had a similar opportunity a couple of minutes later. Jan Maertins took the ball past Scott James in the Carmarthen goal, but he failed to keep his shot down and it flew over the bar.
The final real chance of the first half came after just 15 minutes. Carmarthen were awarded a free kick on the right-hand side of the pitch, which Surman headed and a deflection from a Taffs Well player caused some trouble for Eddie King, who collected the ball just in time to stop it from going in.
Carmarthen seemed to dominate the possession stats for the opening part of the second half, but they failed to make this domination count. They came closest through Noah Daley, whose deflected shot from outside the box looped over the crossbar.
At the other end, Jamie Owen nearly scored a goal which would have ended up on the end of season highlights reel, but his curling shot from outside the box cannoned off the upright. Lee Surman then pulled off an excellent tackle to deny Maertins from a clear-cut scoring opportunity.
After sharing the spoils, Carmarthen have stayed in 12th place in the Cymru South, whilst Taff’s Well have slipped down one to 11th place.
Y Clwb Pêl-droed’s Man of the Match: Lewis Rocke (Carmarthen Town)
Despite being one of the smallest players on the pitch, the 20-year-old centre back was very solid in defence. With the experienced Lee Surman guiding him at the heart of defence, Rocke didn’t give Taff’s Well much breathing space, and his work in clearing the ball from danger was excellent.
