Cardiff Met got their Cymru Premier season up and running as they defeated Penybont 3-2 at Cyncoed Campus.

Days removed from the public news that Christian Edwards would be stepping down at the end of the season, it was the old guard who were the inspiration to their victory.

After a slow start which Nathan Wood netted early, Adam Roscrow equalised before Met’s talisman Eliot Evans scored from the spot. Harry Owen put them further in front but there was a late scare as Lewis Clutton punished Alex Lang’s spill, but it was proved not enough.

So after five goals, what are the key talking points from the Students’ win?

Roscrow back amongst the goals

Back at Cyncoed on loan from The New Saints, Roscrow scored his second goal since coming back for a second spell. His previous goal came in the Nathaniel MG Cup against Ammanford, so this is the first time he’s scored in the league. It was a goal that Met fans will be hoping Roscrow can replicate

He was also fouled by Mael Davies for a penalty which Eliot Evans scored from, proving how when he finds some confidence, he can be the man to lead the front line.

Defensive frailities prove costly again for Bont

For the third time in a row, Penybont have taken the lead and not managed to hold on and it is something that will not to be adressed.

Ismail Yakubu and Matthew Harris, who both departed for Merthyr Town this summer, had a vast amount of experience and it is that Penybont are probably missing out on.

The Bont have an attack-minded defence with both full-backs able to go higher, but a bit of solidity may be needed if they are to starting picking up wins.

The Triple W Connection will cause problems this season

Waite, Watts, and Wood is a trio we will be hearing much about this season if their link-up play in the opening stages was anything to go by.

All three players are technically gifted and Rhys Griffiths seems to have found a system that can accommodate them when they are really on their day.

Unfortunately for them though after twenty minutes where they started like a house on fire, their threat was nullified.

Tom Price could be an important player

Part of a midfield three alongside Chris Baker and Charlie Corsby, Tom Price looked the part in his performance.

Playing as a box-to-box midfielder, Price has plenty of strength in both boxes. His consolation strike against Flint highlighted his attacking ability but the way he commanded the midfield in this match highlights that he is able to mix and match.
