Barry Town United 3-0 Trefelin BGC: Nathaniel Jarvis brace puts Linnets through to quarter-finals

Barry Town United reached the quarter-finals of the Nathaniel MG Cup with a 3-0 win over out-of-form Trefelin BGC at Jenner Park.

Robbie Patten opened the scoring early in the second half before Jarvis added his brace to secure Barry’s place in the next round.

The home side enjoyed the majority of the possession throughout the game, although some sloppy play in the first half meant they failed to capitalise. After Patten’s opening goal, Barry asserted their dominance and the difference in quality between the two squads became apparent.

Lively winger Marcus Day got the first chance of the game after ten minutes of action. Rhys Kavanagh crossed the ball into a dangerous area, but Day failed to connect cleanly, and the shot trickled wide.

Barry found themselves with two more chances soon after, with Callum Sainty involved in both. The first saw Sainty’s long-range strike comfortably saved by Keenan Bailey. The midfielder then dispossessed Kyle Latham and got himself into a crossing position, but he failed to find Jarvis in the box.

Trefelin then started to find their footing in the game, and they nearly opened the scoring in bizarre fashion. Captain Curt Williams played a looping cross into the box, which very nearly found it’s way over Absalom and into the goal, but it bounced back off the crossbar. Evan Press then gave the ball away with a wayward pass which gave the away side an opportunity. Press however made amends for his mistake by clearing the resulting cross.

More opportunities came Barry’s way before half-time. Luke Cooper headed over from a corner, and later Jarvis did well to turn past his marker, before his shot was deflected onto the post.

Barry started the second half as they finished the first, dominating possession and finding chances. Jarvis saw Bailey off his line and lobbed it goalwards, but Bailey scrambled back just in time to palm the ball off the line.

Just minutes later, Barry broke the deadlock. Livewire Rhys Kavanagh’s attempted ball into the box was blocked by the Trefelin defence, but Patten followed up with an impressive long-range effort right into the top-left corner.

Barry’s lead was doubled ten minutes later, and striker Jarvis finally made all his opportunities pay. Bailey tried to claim Day’s cross into the box, but he was beaten to it by the head of Jarvis.

The result was put beyond doubt after 70 minutes, when Jarvis added to his tally. Substitute Brandon Griffiths played a pass into the box which Bailey attempted to claim, but it slipped right through his hands, leaving Jarvis with a tap-in.

Barry kept pushing for another even after their third goal. Jarvis, desperate for his hat-trick, received the ball right in front of the goal, but blasted it high and wide. The home side then hit the woodwork twice in quick succession, Cotterill first hitting the post before Kavanagh’s effort hit the crossbar.

Despite a comfortable score line, Barry will feel that it could have been more. Had they been more clinical, they could have certainly scored another two or three goals.

Player of the Match

Rhys Kavanagh – Barry Town

Kavanagh was was a constant thorn in Trefelin’s defence. Most of the home side’s opportunites in the first half came from his work. In the second half, his pace and mazy running caused plenty of problems for the away side.
