Five young players to watch in the JD Cymru North

The Cymru North is a competitive league with a variety of players.

You’ve got experienced Cymru Premier veterans winding down their careers there to youngsters trying to make a name for themselves.

Often young players need a bit of a springboard to showcase their talents and the second tier of Welsh football is the perfect place to do that.

Ryan Hedges for example played for Flint Town United before he was swept up by Swansea City and now plays his club football in Scotland for Aberdeen.

Dion Donohue is another who plied his trade in the lower levels of Welsh football before earning a move to the Football League.

There are a number of players hoping to follow in their footsteps and with the JD Cymru North season well underway, here are a few young players that have caught the eye.

Morgan Owen (Llandudno) – 20

When you think of all the attributes you need to be a right-back, Pace, Power, an engine to run all day and of course the ability to attack in the modern game, one of the first names that springs to mind is Llandudno’s Morgan Owen.

The 20-year-old has had a superb start to the season getting many minutes under his belt as well as popping up with four goals in all competitions so far this season. Not bad for a right back!

Morgan is a very versatile player, having played in the centre of midfield in the past for clubs including Glan Conwy where he won a league title.

He possesses a great balance between his defensive work and his attacking play with the ability to pass a man and deliver quality crosses. His engine has developed since joining Llandudno and is perfectly suited to the modern-day right-back role.

Morgan is certainly one to watch this season and, in years to come.

Sam Jones (Colwyn Bay) – 21

A defender’s nightmare! Sam Jones has caused more than his share of problems for opposing defences so far this season.

The winger’s ability to run with the ball at speed as well as make creative runs in behind defences makes him stand out from the crowd. Sam has three goals so far this season but his overall effect on the team is clear.

The 21-year-old has had a lot of minutes for Colwyn Bay in the early stages of the season and will no doubt keep defenders on their toes in the games to come.

Jamie Hyne (Guilsfield) – 22

A goal machine for third in the table Guilsfield, Jamie Hyne has come up with eight goals so far this season.

Hyne has scored some very important goals for his side thus far including bagging a winner in a tight game against Llanidloes Town

The 22-year-old had a good goal scoring record at former club Caersws where he picked up a few hattricks before securing a move to Guilsfield.

Expect plenty more goals from Jamie this season.

Matty Hill (Ruthin) – 20

Ruthin forward Matty Hill has provided 13 goals for his side in all competitions this season including a hattrick against former club Rhydymwyn.

The 20-year-old was nominated for the JD Cymru North Player of the Month in September after helping his side to victories against Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant and a superb home victory to Prestatyn town. Hill netting twice on both occasions.

Hill is a vital player for Ruthin Town and has shown his importance in a few tight affairs already this season including netting twice against Prestatyn and Bangor to secure six points for his side.

He will certainly bag a few more goals come the end of the season.

Robbie Williams (Gresford Athletic) – 20

Shot stopper Robbie Williams has been very impressive so far this season with five clean sheets to his name.

The 20-year-old was up for nomination in September’s player of the month vote after three clean sheets set Gresford on their way to two wins and a draw last month.

Williams put in a fantastic performance away to Bangor where he helped his side to a 2-0 victory.

A top keeper is a must-have. Robbie Williams has proved vital for Gresford so far this season. Expect big things from the young goalkeeper in the future
