Cymru Premier could be reduced to ten teams for professional status

The Cymru Premier could face a reduction of teams in return for a fully professional league, it has been revealed.

Both the FAW and its 12-member clubs have been discussing various ideas through a number of meetings to improve the standard of Welsh football.

An exclusive from ‘The Sport Report’ says that there have been plans discussed by the FAW to make some serious amendments to the division.

It includes reducing the division from 12 to 10, as well as possible following the likes of Ireland in playing through the summer.

The reduction in teams is believed to help with working towards making each club professional, which could improve the standards of football.

In 2010, the division was cut from 18 teams to 12, with a change to the format.

It would see 22 games played in the regular season before a split between the top half and bottom half, with 10 further games.

An end of season play-off would be played for the prize of European football.

This season however, the prize for the team that overcomes the play-offs is a spot in the SPFL Trust Trophy.
