North Carolina Courage have traded Welsh international Angharad James to the San Diego Wave ahead of the 2022 NWSL season.

James only joined the Courage this year but is already on the move to join the expansion side, where she will be managed by former Manchester United boss and England international and Casey Stoney.

The tireless midfielder will also link up with fellow Wales-native Rich Gunney who was announced as the club’s assistant coach last month, after leaving his role with Portland Thornes.

San Diego Wave are one of two California-based clubs joining the NWSL in the 2022 season, alongside Angel City FC of Los Angeles.

As their maiden season approaches they have begun building out their squad, adding James to a list of players that already include World Cup winner Abby Dahlkemper and Olympic gold medalist Kailen Sheridan.

During her short time with the two-time NWSL champions, James played 827 minutes across 17 games scoring one goal.

NC Courage head coach Sean Nahas told the club’s website about the 27-year-old departure: “We cannot thank Angharad enough for her time here with the club, albeit short.

“She is a wonderful professional and person, and on behalf of the club, I wish her nothing but the best in the next step of her journey.

“Haz is a tidy player who loves the game and is someone that players gravitate towards.

“Every day she wanted more information and detail that would help her master her position.

“She is someone who I have great respect for both on and off the field, and I look forward to seeing the great steps she will take moving forward.”
