Risca United secure huge coup as former Wales international joins

Paul Parry playing for Cardiff City

Risca United have made a marquee signing by securing the services of former Cardiff City and Wales international Paul Parry.

The 41-year-old makes a return to senior-level football eight years after he last played for Shrewsbury Town.

Parry’s arrival at the Centre of Excellence is somewhat of a coup given his extensive playing career in professional football.

The Chepstow-born winger made just short of 500 appearances in the Football League for Hereford United, Cardiff City, Preston North End, and Shrewsbury.

During his time with the Bluebirds, he reached the FA Cup final, starting in the 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth at Wembley Stadium.

Parry’s new club boss Simon Berry said: “Massive signing for the club who will add quality and experience to our squad.”

Berry’s side have been busy in the January transfer window as they try to preserve their Cymru Status by recruiting players capable of playing in the division.

At the start of the month, they announced the signings of Josh Aspinall-Smyth from FC Stratford, Camden Duncan from Cinderford Town, and Dan Spencer from Bristol Manor Farm.

The Cuckoos in their first season back in the second tier are currently in a relegation battle and are a point adrift of safety.

They are scheduled to play against Llantwit Major at home this coming Friday which could be Parry’s debut.
