Trefelin BGC 2-2 Briton Ferry Llansawel: Reds rescue point with Bowen penalty

A late penalty from Luke Bowen rescued a point for Briton Ferry against local rivals Trefelin. After leading at the break a quick start to the second half saw Trefelin lead before a controversial penalty late on.

Gavin Jones gave Briton Ferry the lead after 28 minutes and a close fought first half. The second half saw Trefelin out of the blocks quickly and soon level. Jamie Latham scoring on 51 minutes. Jordan Edwards gave the hosts the lead on 59 minutes. A controversial penalty gave Luke Bowen the chance to level for Briton Ferry. Bowen duly scored but despite late chances at both ends the side shared the points.

Trefelin now sit in 11th place in the Cymru South table with 22 points. Briton Ferry move back into 3rd on 40 points now six behind leaders Llantwit Major.


In a wet first half Tyler Brock had the games first chance shooting just wide of Chris Curtis’ goal from inside the box.

The early part of the game was back and fourth and Trefelin won a free kick mid way into the Briton Ferry half. Jamie Latham went for goal with a low effort but it went wide.

Both side were looking to get forward but neither side were able to find a quality pass in the final third. Damon Thomas being picked out wide in space but when he sent a cross into the box there was no one there.

Briton Ferry had a good chance to take the lead as Luke Bowen’s flick found Declan Evans in the box. Evans sent the ball goal wards but was denied by a finger tip save from Curtis.

Ferry did take the lead thanks to Gavin Jones. From a Liam McCreesh corner Trefelin couldn’t clear away Kieran Williams had two shots which were blocked before the ball fell to Gavin Jones. Jones sent a low drive towards goal which went past Curtis at his near post.

As the second half started the sun came out and Trefelin started brightly. Joe Clarke teeing up a chance for Jordan Edwards who was unable to connect well with his shot.

Jamie Latham sent a shot whisking past the post as the host looked to equalise. Soon after Latham saw another effort go just wide.

Latham soon got his goal as he met a corner to the far post to head in with a bullet of a header.

Luke Bowen almost wiped out Latham’s goal when his lob from outside the box rolled towards goal only to hit the post.

Trefelin were soon back on the front foot and putting the visitors under pressure. Putting good crosses into the box the pressure told when Jordan Edwards headed in to give Trefelin the lead.

Trefelin tried to extend their lead with Joe Clarke seeing one shot blocked before sending another over the bar.

Briton Ferry pushed up looking to get back into the game. Joe Hunt tried to put a free kick under the wall only for the ball hit the feet of the wall.

As the game went into the final ten minutes the visitors were awarded a penalty. As the ball was sent into the Trefelin box the referee saw a push from a Trefelin defender. Despite complaints from Trefelin the penalty stood. Luke Bowen stepped up to take it and smashed the ball into the top right corner.

Declan Evans was able to get onto a cross from Bowen with time running out but his shot was saved.

Damon Thomas went down in the box late on. He wanted a penalty but this time the referee saw nothing wrong and waved play on.

Neither side could find a winning goal in a hard fought contest which could have gone to either team.
