Blaenavon Blues go 30-game season unbeaten… but don’t win the league

Imagine going the entire league season unbeaten and still failing to win the league… that happened to Blaenavon Blues in the Gwent Premier League.

Lee Challenger’s side won 23 out of their 30 matches and drew the other seven, scoring 99 goals and conceding just 22.

And despite what would in most seasons would be enough to win a title, they were pipped to the post by Lliswerry.

After Blaenavon Blues concluded their season with a 6-0 win over Ynysddu Welfare on Wednesday, they had to hope Lliswerry would drop points in their final fixture.

Instead, though, the former Welsh League side did what was needed of them and they win 2-0 against Caerleon thanks to goals from Dale Cooke, which took him to 29 for the season, and Dean Merrett.

It meant that both sides would finish on 76 points but Lliswerry would beat Blaenavon to it on goal difference, having scored five more goals.

The Premier Division was a closely contested league at the top with Pill YMCA behind both sides with jut a point and were the league’s second top goal scorers with 99.

RTB Ebbw Vale meanwhile were by far the most prolific and scored 116 goals but they were six points short of the top two.

Both Blaenavon and Lliswerry have reason to celebrate as they have finished in the top two which is the position needed to secure promotion to the Ardal Leagues.

They will now await the outcome of their Tier Three Certification application which is due to come in mid-May.
