Fifth-placed Llangollen Town granted promotion to Ardal North East

Llangollen Town have been given a promotion to the Ardal North East, following a meeting by the Football Association of Wales.

A vacancy had been left after Machynlleth, on the same week the fixture list was due to be released, had withdrawn from the league, citing player commitment.

Taking their place is Llangollen, who finished fifth in the North East Wales Premier Division last season.

The FAW’s National Game Board met earlier this week to discuss who would take the vacancy and have opted to promote the Denbighshire based team out of the options available.

A club statement read: “Following a @FAWales meeting, we have been informed that for the 22/23 season we have been promoted into @ArdalNorthern East League(Tier 3). This is obviously great news for all involved and we look forward to welcoming everyone to Tower Field.”

Fist-team manager Luke Maybury said: “Going right in at the deep end with which short notice. Nothing less than what the lads deserve after last season’s efforts. Huge thank you to the committee for getting everything in place. Let’s give it a go boys.”

Carno, who had finished 14th, were not given a reprieve and have taken their place in the 17-team MMP Central Wales North division along with Kerry.

Before the creation of the Ardal Leagues, Llangollen had spent the past five seasons in Division One of the Wrexham League which was the fifth tier of Welsh football.

They did have a one-season spell in the 2009/10 season after winning the Premier Division title in 2009 but were relegated along with nine other teams.  Since then their highest finish was finishing sixth in the Premier Division in 2013.

Elsewhere in the Ardal Leagues, Canton Liberal have voiced their displeasure at the applying of vacancies process.

Ardal North East 22/23: Berriew, Bow Street, Builth Wells, Caersws, Cefn Albion, Corwen, Dolgellau, Llandrindod Wells, Llanfair United, Llangollen, Llanrhaeadr, Llanuwchllyn, Penycae, Rhayader Town, Rhos Aelwyd, Welshpool Town.
