Taffs Well began the season with a convincing 4-1 win over Ynshir Albions in the Nathaniel MG Cup first round.
Ethan Cann opening the scoring after 27 minutes for the host’s before Joshua Allen made it two just before halftime. The first half ended in frantic fashion with Andre Griffiths pulling a goal back for the Buns. Joshua Allen got his second before the break as his goal ended the first half. Two minutes into the second half and David Lyon put the Wellmen three up.
Dane Williams’ men gave a good account of themselves but lost out to a clinical Wellmen side that were boosted by a brace from one of their newest arrivals.
Taffs Well will go into round two of the MG Cup where they could face JD Cymru Premier opponents. Ynyshir bow out at the first round but have a taste of what awaits in the JD Cymru South season.
After an even opening few minutes where both sides tried to establish control. It was the host’s who had the games first big chance. Taffs Well’s David Lyon received the ball in the box and with a quick touch to moved the ball to left foot. He then curled the ball towards the top corner. His effort however struck the bar but a big chance for the Wellman.
Ynyshir’s first chance came when Corey Morgan won the ball out on the left. His pass into the box found Scott Jones who fired a first time shot that was blocked by Scott Hillman.
Taffs Well took the lead in the 27th minute when a high ball into the box. What seemed to be a routine catch for Buns keeper Luke Evans. Evans dropped the ball into the feet of Ethan Cann who fired home from close range.
Ynyshir wanted a penalty when Dre Caple was played though in the box. Edward King came out to dive over the ball and Caple went over with call’s for a penalty but the ref waved away their protests.
As the half was coming to a close the host’s doubled their lead. David Lyon playing a good ball into the box for Cann who’s low shot was saved by Evans. The Wellmen kept the pressure on and worked the ball back into the box for Allen who fired in from close range.
The scoring didn’t stop there as Ynyshir pulled a goal back a minute into added time. Andre Griffiths winning the ball just outside the box and firing a low drive into the bottom corner.
Just as Ynyshir thought that they were only going into the break a goal down the host got a third. Joshua Allen getting his second with a powerful close-range shot as Ynyshir were caught napping.
The second half began like the first ended. Two minutes after the restart David Lyon was played in behind the Buns defence by Cann. Lyon with some quick footwork moved the ball across before coolly rolling past Evans.
Ynyshir kept fighting and looking to get back into the game Jacob Matthews seeing his shot blocked. Soon after Leon Anstee hitting an effort wide.
Despite their attempts Ynyshir were unable to find any goals back and Taffs Well will go into the next round.
