Penybont have completed the signing of former Cardiff City and Ipswich Town defender Josh Yorwerth.

Yorwerth is from Bridgend and had been training with the Cymru Premier outfit with a view of potentially joining Rhys Griffiths‘ side. The six-foot-one-inch centre-back has since agreed a move to the SDM Glass Stadium and is their sixth signing of the season.

The 27-year-old was named as a substitute for their league match with Airbus UK last Saturday for the first time but didn’t enter the pitch. He could make his league debut when Penybont host Connah’s Quay Nomads on Saturday, October 22.

He arrives at the club with just shy of three appearances in professional football in both League One and Two. Yorwerth came through the academy set up of Cardiff City but left in 2015.

The dual Wales youth international moved to Ipswich and signed on a two-year deal and made three appearances in the EFL Cup for the Tractor Boys during a one-year spell.

It was during his time at Portman Road he was loaned out to Crawley Town where he got his grounding in professional football. He became a regular in the team and made 25 appearances with a release with Mick McCarthy agreed.

He ended up joining Crawley on a permanent basis where he made 21 appearances, but he had a short loan spell at Merthyr Town during that period.

Yorwerth returned to Sussex and became a first-team regular under Leeds United and Australia legend Harry Kewell. His time would come to an end however in 2018 on the back of a 43-game season, which took his tally of appearances up to 66.

A move believed to be a six-figure fee was agreed upon between Crawley and Peterborough United and he went on to make three appearances.

Yorwerth’s footballing career would be put on hold as he evaded a drugs test in which he was given a four-year ban from football. It is believed to have been one of the longest in the history of English professional football.

He has since served his ban and is now available to resume his playing career at the age of 27-years-old for his hometown club.
