Aberystwyth Town cruise past Barry Town United to go sixth in the Adran Premier
Aberystwyth put five past a deflated Barry Town in the Adran Premier , to move above their oppenents into sixth place.
In a bottom half clash, it looked as though it would be a tight game between the two sides. Barry beat Aber Town 1-0 at Jenner Park in their last meeting just a few weeks ago, with Mackenzie Olden getting the winner.
The striker would add to her tally at Park Avenue in their second meeting of the season, however it would only be a consolation in a game which Aberystwyth ran away with.
Aber took the lead with just three minutes played. Rebecca Mathias, who had a fantastic game in the Seasiders’ back line, lofted a ball from a free-kick into the box. Barry failed to deal with it, and the ball fell to Emily Thomas, who tapped home past United goalkeeper Erin Brennan, to give Aber Town a deserved lead at Park Avenue.
The hosts doubled their lead just ten minutes later. Shauna Chambers found space on the edge of the area, and fired past Brennan, despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to it.
It got worse for Barry just six minutes later. Gwenllian Jones fired in a corner from the right side, which found Mathias, who placed a shot past Brennan, to put Aberystwyth 3-0 up with just 20 minutes played in Mid Wales.
Olden was booked for the away side five minutes before halftime, as Barry began to get frustrated.
Just moments later, Ffiona Evans put Aberystwyth 4-0 up. She battled well on the edge of the box to bring the ball down, and slotted perfectly into the bottom corner, to give Aber Town a four goal advantage going into the break.
Aberystwyth Town kept piling on the pressure in the second half, winning the ball back instantly from the second half kickoff.
Ruby Hamed-Jones came on for Rhian Thomas mid way through the second half, with the game almost out of sight for Barry.
Gavin Allen also switched up his side, with Tania Wylde and Amy Jenkins coming on for Chambers and Gwenllian Jones.
The Seasiders picked up their only booking of the game with less than 20 minutes remaining, after Elin Jones mistimed a challenge to be shown a yellow card.
Just moments later, Olden would eventually get her name on the scoresheet, after a deflected effort found its way past Elen Valentine, who didn’t have too much to do throughout the game.
Barry looked to be creating more chances soon after until the 77th minute, when a last man challenge by Barry skipper Lauren Harris gave referee Teifion Cook no choice than to dismiss her.
Emily Nicholdson made way for Maisy Fahey-Pennell after the red card, in an attempt to avoid further damage.
From the resulting free-kick, Amy Jenkins stepped up and fired a powerful free-kick into the top corner, giving Brennan no chance in the Barry net, to seal the win for the hosts.
15-year-old Carys Pugh-Jones also came on in the last ten minutes, after Elen Valentine took a knock in the Aber Town net.
There would go on to be no more action in the last ten minutes however, with Aberystwyth Town moving up to sixth in the Adran Premier after a brilliant display.
That’s three wins in a row in all competitions for the Seasiders, who face Tregaron Turfs in Cup action in midweek, before returning to league action with a trip to South Wales, where they will face Pontypridd United in another crucial game in the race for the top four.
Barry will look to bounce back from two sucessive defeats, when they face Connah’s Quay Nomads in the Adran Trophy at home.
The Linnets will then face Swansea City in the Adran Premier a week later, before a must-win game at Jenner Park against bottom of the league Abergavenny.
