Cardiff City manager Iain Darbyshire admitted that the wintery conditions affected their game, but were delighted as they narrowly beat Barry Town.

The Bluebirds came out the better in the pouring rain when substitute Megan Saunders’ 89th-minute goal clinched a 1-0 win at Cardiff International Sports Stadium.

Speaking following the game, City manager Iain Darbyshire commented: “It could be one of the biggest goals of our season.” He began.

“We couldn’t play any football. We were worried about the pitch being frozen, then the rain was that bad, it was like something out of a movie, it was crazy.

“Once the game gets going, it’s up to the referee so if we’d come out 0-0 it would’ve been frustrating but ultimately the pitch was fine [in regards to it being frozen] it was just the heavy rain, and now we’re happy the game has been played.”

Saunders, came off of the bench to score the winner, netting her first goal of the Adran Premier season. She had scored in Cup competitions, but this was her first taste of a goal in league action.

He added: “Megan has been working hard, she’s deserved that moment and that’s why you have a squad and we kept going, we deserved the three points and we got them in the end.

“We have a couple of weeks off and the girls will be doing bits over the next two weeks but we need this little break now when you’re training and playing three times a week and they’re all full-time employees as well it gets a bit repetitive.

“We missed a lot of chances and it was difficult but we won’t focus on any negatives, we’ve got out of that game with three points and it’s an incredible result just before Christmas.”

Darbyshire’s women are eight points clear at the top of the table following their late winner over Barry with a cup game their first return on January 15th.
