Colwyn Bay’s winning run goes on against Chirk to strengthen Cymru North title bid

Colwyn Bay continued their title charge on Saturday afternoon with a 24th league win in a row against a well drilled Chirk side.

The Bay struck the opener with 18 minutes played when Cai Owen’s teasing cross from the right was tapped home by Sam Hart at the back post.

Twelve minutes later, the home side doubled their advantage with Kristian Platt heading in at the back post from a Tom McCready corner.

The first half started with neither side able to get a foothold on the game. The first chance of the match fell to Tom McCready when the ball landed at his feet from a defensive header, he saw goalkeeper Callum Taylor off his line and attempted a chip but narrowly wide.

McCready was involved again not long after when Creamer let the ball roll to him on the left side of the area, he swept the ball towards goal but straight into the keeper’s hands.

With 18 minutes gone, the Bay opened the scoring after a low ball across the box from Cai Owen found an onrushing Sam Hart who tapped in from close range.

The home side made it two after 30 minutes when McCready delivered a great corner to the back post where Kristian Platt was waiting patiently to head in.

Chirk’s first real chance came when Crichton brought down attacker Dale Davies just outside the area, the resulting free kick was whipped in, but the goalkeeper did well to punch away.

The visitors nearly pulled a goal back on the 36-minute mark when Max McLaughlin cut inside on his left foot and shot from outside the area, narrowly missing the top left-hand corner.

There was a great chance for Sirrell just before the break as his headed effort went wide of the mark.

As the half came to a close the Bay nearly made it three when McCready put a ball in behind the Chirk defence to find Tommy Creamer, he squared the ball to Hill in the box, but it was played behind him reaching Stefan Edwards on the back post who’s effort was blocked.

Second half

Chirk were first to cause problems at the start of the second half when the ball was whipped across the box towards Rhys Edwards, but the ball fell kindly to the Bay defenders who managed to clear.

With 59 minutes gone McCready tried to catch the goalkeeper out with a low free kick at the near post but the goalkeeper managed to gather after a spill.

There was a big chance for Chrik with ten to play when Crichton attempted to claim a cross from the right but failed to keep hold of the ball as an attacker jumped with him, the ball landed to Dale Davies who shot towards an open goal but Sam Downey got back well to block the ball sending it for a corner. An important bit of defending to keep the Bay’s clean sheet intact.
