Cwmbran Celtic and Goytre United cancel each other out in tight affair

Cwmbran Celtic & Goytre United came into this midtable game in the JD Cymru South with mixed recent results and they played out a closely fought 1-1 draw.

In a first half that ebbed and flowed on a sunny but mild Saturday afternoon. Goytre United took the lead in the 43rd minute as Celtic once again conceded just before the halftime whistle. A great run by Daffyd Owen from right-back was passed to Cameron Harris who powered the ball past Watkins in the Cwmbran net to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Once Celtic had weathered the early onslaught from Goytre in the first 15 minutes they got back into the game and had a couple of decent efforts themselves. Most notably Tom Meechan running down the left got himself into space but his shot was straight at the United keeper Martin. Goytre had the best chances of the half after the half-hour mark especially when a shot from a Goytre corner was powered towards the goal and only the bar saved the hosts from going behind.

However, that lead did not last long as after a much better start to the second half, Celtic equalised in the 55th minute after a period of good pressure. Thomas Meechan’s shot was saved but Isaac Powell got on the rebound and slotted the ball home calmly to make it 1-1 with his 4th goal of the campaign. That was how the score remained until the full-time whistle as Goytre missed the opportunity to overtake Celtic which they could have done with a victory today.

This result keeps Cwmbran in 8th place with 29 points and keeping more of an eye on teams behind them as they are now eight points adrift of Llantwit in 7th place (37 points) but only two points ahead of Taffs Well and Goytre in 9th and 10th respectively who have 27 points.
