Llantwit Major coast to victory over Abergavenny to ensure Cymru South survival
Llantwit Major maintained their unbeaten run as they defeated Abergavenny Town 2-0 to climb to sixth place in the JD Cymru South.
The current JD Cymru South Champions raced ahead on a drizzly night in Monmouthshire courtesy of an own goal after Llantwit Major right back Thomas Lillico’s drilled cross was turned into his own net by Abergavenny Town’s George Clarke.
The pressure continued to mount on relegation threatened Town as Major exploited space left on the wings. Major’s Rob Jones picked out Major centre back Thomas Walbeoff with a deep cross from the second phase of a corner, which Walbeoff sent looping back across goal, beating the Town keeper all ends up to get his first ever goal for Major.
As the first half lingered on, it became apparent that a tired Town side needed a dose of inspiration with Major looking much sharper and being first to every loose ball. Despite starting the second half with a little more purpose than the first, the hosts never looked likely, and neither side could control what turned out to be a rather dull second half as the weather turned from bad to worse.
One final push from Town around the 80th minute came and went without ever threatening Jack Lansdown’s clean sheet in the Major goal. Town, who sit four points above the drop zone, now turn their attention to Friday’s match against bottom side Ynyshir Albions FC. Major host Afan Lido FC on Saturday where they will look to make it 10 games unbeaten and finish the season strongly.
