Newtown AFC youngster Arnie Roberts has become the youngest player to compete in a Cymru Premier fixture this weekend.

The academy graduate broke the record after making a substitute appearance in Saturdays 4-0 victory over Caernarfon Town.

The previous record set on November 27th 2004 by CPD Porthmadog saw Steve Jones make an appearance at 15 years, seven months, and 20 days. The new record is set as he made the appearance at the age of 15 years, six months, and nine days.

Speaking on X the club shared their delight over the new record saying: The real story of the Cymru Leagues this weekend – shows progress from Academy to first team – congratulations to Arnie and all his family and coaches who helped him on his footballing journey.”

The club chairman Nick Evans also stated his happiness on X saying “Proud moment yesterday. Football is about making stories and this is right up there. I can remember taking him on in our Newtown academy at the age of 11. Raw talent. Now in the history books! He’s now shown the pathway for others to follow!”

Speaking to Arnie on his record-breaking appearance he said “I appreciated the opportunity to play with the first team, It gave me a boost in confidence and I’m thankful for them to ask. Hopefully there’s more to come.”
