Rob Page optimistic ahead of future despite penalty heartache

Wales manager Rob Page looks on

Rob Page stated he was ‘absolutely gutted’ for his squad of players after their 5-4 penalty shoot-out loss at home to Poland saw them miss out on a place at Euro 2024.

After a goalless 120 minutes in Cardiff, the tie was settled by a penalty shoot-out that saw Leeds United winger Daniel James be the unfortunate individual to miss the all important spot kick.

Despite the disappointment of not qualifying for another major competition Page stated he was proud of his players efforts during the campaign.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the journey that they’re on, it’s a horrible way to go out but hopefully well learn and become stronger having gone through the horrible experiences of tonight.”

There was speculation over the future of the Wales boss if they failed to qualify for the competition, but Page insisted he is still eager to lead the national side, with his contract set to run until the 2026 World Cup.

“We’re a team in transition and while were in the transition were one penalty kick away from qualifying, so we’ve got games in June, Nation League in Autumn and we’ve got the start of a World Cup qualifying campaign” said Page.

“That’s my full focus on building what we’ve already started and the transition in which were in at this minute in time” added Page.

His future has since been confirmed by FAW President Steve Williams stating: “The FAW can confirm Rob Page is their manager for the forthcoming campaign in accordance with his contract.”

“Rob is the manager. His contract runs to the end of the World Cup and that is how we continue to work.”

The Wales boss also spoke on the promising future ahead for the national side, with the senior players gaining more experience, alongside youth players who could soon progress to the first team.

“Having gone through those experiences tonight will make them bigger and better in the future.”

“Im keen to get as many young good players through to that first team as possible, but its got to be done in the right way.”
