Forest Green Rovers are set to sell defender Gabriel Kircough from Cymru Premier side Penybont, according to a report from GloucestershireLive.

The outlet claims that a deal has already been agreed for the highly-rated young centre-back, with a medical now completed and a move to The New Lawn imminent. An official announcement is expected to be made on Monday, confirming Kircough’s switch to Gloucestershire.

Forest Green Rovers Strengthen Under Robbie Savage

Forest Green Rovers are managed by former Wales international Robbie Savage, who earned 39 caps for his country during his playing career.

FGR have already been active in the transfer window, strengthening their attacking options with the signing of Welsh forward Ricardo Rees from Merthyr Town, who was prolific during his time at Penydarren Park. The 26-year-old scored 25 goals in 24 games for Paul Michael’s men, and had attracted interest from the EFL, with Ian Holloway confirming Swindon Town’s interest.

They currently sit third in the National League table, just two points off the top, as they push for promotion. Forest Green were relegated from the Football League last season, but are hoping for an immediate return to England’s fully professional leagues.

Gabriel Kircough’s Penybont Career

Kircough, 21, has been a key figure for Penybont this season, missing just two league matches and featuring in their most recent outing – a 1-0 victory over Llanelli Town.

In total, the defender has made 86 appearances for the Bridgend-based club, playing a role in both of Penybont’s European campaigns.

He joined following a move from Pontardawe Town in 2023, having been trusted to play senior football at a young age, boasting over 100 appearances across Welsh football’s top three tiers, helping his first side win the Ardal South West title as a teenager.

His impending departure is a significant loss for the Cymru Premier side as they prepare for the final 11 games of the season, where they are qualification for the UEFA Conference League.

Rhys Griffiths’ side have already been knocked out of the JD Welsh Cup, leaving league qualification as their only remaining route into Europe. They currently sit nine points behind second-placed Connah’s Quay Nomads, who occupy the automatic UEFA Conference League qualifying spot. However, they do hold a four-point cushion over Caernarfon Town, which would see them host a play-off semi-final if the season ended as it stands.
