Llanelli Town take on Haverfordwest County this weekend, with their Cymru Premier fate potentially being decided this evening.

The Reds are all but guaranteed to compete in the JD Cymru South next season, but when will their relegation be mathematically confirmed, and when is that likely to happen?

How can Llanelli Town avoid relegation against Haverfordwest County?

Sitting 19 points adrift of 10th-place Flint Town United and with only seven games available, Llanelli have only 21 points available to them. With the clubs’ goal difference being 40 goals worse than the Silkmen’s.

To stop themselves from their relegation being confirmed this weekend, Llanelli would need to avoid defeat to Haverfordwest. If they were to win or draw, then Flint could still relegate them by bettering their result.

In the Phase One fixture at Stebonheath Park, Llanelli Town came out 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from former Bluebirds forward Danny Williams. The side had also claimed a commanding 3-0 victory over the Bluebirds in the Welsh Cup.

Of the three meetings between the sides this season, Llanelli have won twice, with Haverfordwest taking the most recent encounter. While the campaign has been tough, these results show that there is still reason for optimism — the Reds have proven they can compete at least.

What’s happened at Stebonheath Park?

The majority of incoming transfers this season have been younger players, many without previous Cymru Premier experience. Alex Pennock and Mike Lewis were the most senior additions, both goalkeepers who have top-flight experience.

According to Transfermarkt data, the average age of arrivals was 22.8, compared to 25.4 for departures, reflecting a clear shift towards a younger squad profile.

After the transfer window had shut in the summer, there has been a significant change from the side that secured the Cymru South title on 12 April.

Six of the starting XI from that decisive match have since moved on, along with five of the seven substitutes. With several senior players also departed, and the influential Liam Eason remaining in the Cymru South with Cambrian United.

Several of the players who had left stuck around in the Cymru South, joining promotion-chasing teams such as Cambrian United and Trefelin.

This season marked Lee John’s first managerial role in the top flight. While he brought extensive experience from the second tier, the Cymru Premier presents different challenges compared to the Cymru South.

The Cymru Premier provides greater travel demands that involve travelling across Wales compared to the Cymru South, in which they would have been travelling across the South region of the country.

Squad management would also have brought a different set of pressures, particularly given the higher standard of competition faced in the top flight. Balancing transfer activity with day-to-day squad management during an ongoing campaign can inevitably have an impact on performances across the season.

What John achieved during his time at Llanelli should not be overlooked. He played a pivotal role in revitalising the club and guiding them back to the top flight for the first time since the 2018/19 campaign. That achievement reignited the community’s belief after consecutive runner-up finishes had fallen just short of promotion.

The former Llanelli manager also openly accepted responsibility for the club’s struggles this season, a reflection of his professionalism, accountability and character.

It has been a challenging campaign for the Reds, who secured their first win in the ninth match following a difficult run of seven consecutive defeats. After that breakthrough, the team picked up a significant victory over Haverfordwest County, going unbeaten in three games and giving the impression that the side was finally on the rise.

Since their victory over Haverfordwest County on 26 September, the side has managed just two draws alongside 13 defeats. Losing streaks of six and seven matches have left them firmly adrift at the bottom of the table.

Llanelli are currently the lowest scorers in the Cymru Premier this season, having netted just 14 goals in 25 games. The club’s top scorer is Danny Williams, with four goals, followed by defender Sean Cronin.

The departure of Ethan Cann to fellow Cymru Premier side Penybont was a significant blow to Llanelli’s attacking line. Cann had already contributed two goals this season and was the club’s top scorer in the previous campaign, making his departure all the more noticeable.

Who could be swapping places with Llanelli?

Next season, for the 2026/27 Cymru Premier campaign, the league is set for a major structural overhaul, with the race for promotion from the second tier intensified by an increase in the number of sides going up.

Under the new format, the top flight will expand to 16 teams, meaning six clubs will be promoted with three from the Cymru South and three from the Cymru North, while two sides will drop out of the Cymru Premier.

Cambrian United have set the pace for much of the campaign and currently sit top of the table. They are the highest scorers in the Cymru South, with 52 goals from 21 games, while former Llanelli Town player Liam Eason leads the league in both goals and assists.

Close behind are Trefelin BGC, who have matched Cambrian stride for stride. Andy Hill’s side have a game in hand, boast the league’s best defence with just ten goals conceded, and are on an 18-game unbeaten run, including 11 consecutive wins.

While the top two look well placed, the battle for the final promotion spot is far tighter.

Recently relegated Aberystwyth Town occupy third spot and are firmly in contention under Craig Williams, currently enjoying a four-game winning streak.

Ammanford sit fourth, one point behind Aberystwyth, though recent defeats have seen them slip from the promotion places. Caerau Ely are just two points further back and recently picked up a big 3–1 victory over Ammanford.

With several of these sides still to face each other, the run-in promises to be decisive in determining who secures that coveted third promotion spot.

The top two, Llandudno and Airbus, currently sit comfortably in the promotion spots. The race in the North appears more settled than in the South, with both sides holding significant leads over the chasing pack.

Llandudno have built a 20-point gap over fourth-placed Newtown with ten games left to play. Jordan Hadaway’s side have enjoyed an impressive season, sitting top of the Cymru North while also performing strongly in domestic competitions.

After knocking out Connah’s Quay Nomads and narrowly losing to The New Saints, it appears to be a matter of when and not if Llandudno secures promotion.

Airbus sit second and also look set for a return to the Cymru Premier, boasting a commanding advantage over the chasing teams. Mark Allen’s side are currently on a seven-game winning streak, further strengthening their position.

The final promotion spot is likely to be contested by three sides: Holywell Town, Newtown and Guilsfield. Holywell appear to be the favourites, holding an 11-point lead over their rivals. Although Newtown and Guilsfield have games in hand, they will need to capitalise quickly to close the gap and ignite a genuine promotion battle.
