It’s a season of change in the Cymru South, with three new clubs joining the division, Llanelli Town dropping down from the Cymru Premier, and a slightly revised league structure in place.

Cwmbran Celtic have been relegated, making way for Ardal Southern champions Caerphilly Athletic and Pure Swansea, while Pontardawe Town secured their place via the play-offs.

The champions will earn automatic promotion to the Cymru Premier. The runners-up will face the second-placed side from the Cymru North in a play-off, with the winners then taking on the club that finishes 14th in the Cymru Premier for a place in the top flight.

Last season, only one team was relegated as the Cymru Premier expanded to 16 clubs. This time around, three sides will drop out of the division, leaving little margin for error at the bottom end of the table.

The bookmakers have already priced up the title race, with few surprises among the early favourites and outsiders.

Three-way title race predicted

The opening odds suggest the Cymru South title race is too close to call, with Aberystwyth Town, Caerau Ely and Pontypridd United all priced at 3/1.

Caerau Ely came closest to reaching the Cymru Premier last season, finishing just three points behind Ammanford in third place. The Young Guns will also benefit from a new artificial surface at Cwrt-yr-Ala Road, while their summer recruitment has added plenty of experience. Lewis Harling is the standout arrival from league rivals Carmarthen Town, bringing a wealth of Cymru Premier experience as well as appearances in UEFA Conference League qualifying. Josh Graham arrives as a league title winner with Barry Town United, while Harvey Sing adds further quality after impressing with Newport City.

Aberystwyth Town have taken a different approach to their previous recruitment following their relegation two seasons ago, focusing on attracting the best local talent from mid-Wales rather than looking across the border to the West Midlands.

Dan Owen was one of the standout performers in the Cymru North last season, scoring 13 goals and providing two assists for Penrhyncoch. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to the Cymru South. Liam Walsh and Jonathan Evans add valuable top-flight experience, while Dillon Browne and Harry Cottam were both influential figures in Caersws’ successful campaign. Although not a local player, Aaron Williams reunites with former teammate Craig Williams and arrives with an EFL background that could prove invaluable at this level.

Pontypridd United are perhaps the most intriguing of the three favourites. After relegation from the Cymru Premier, they endured a disappointing campaign, finishing 11th. Mark Dunford was appointed ahead of the season but departed in December, with Matt Driscoll taking over after enjoying success in English non-league football with Cinderford Town.

Having now had time to settle into the role and implement his ideas at the USW Sport Park, Driscoll hopes the additions of Clayton Farrah, James Bloom and Richard Noyes from Newport City can help Pontypridd mount a much stronger challenge this season.

Chasing pack

Cardiff Draconians, Carmarthen Town and Llanelli Town make up the chasing pack behind the three joint favourites.

The Dracs exceeded expectations in their first season at this level, and with Nana Baah remaining at the helm, they could spring a few surprises once again. However, they have lost two influential players, with Dan Lewis joining Afan Lido and Marinho Manga making the move to Penybont.

Carmarthen Town are entering a new era following the departure of Mark Aizlewood. The club is under new management, although they are yet to announce any summer signings, while several key members of last season’s squad have departed Richmond Park.

Llanelli Town are not being heavily backed for an immediate return to the Cymru Premier after another period of upheaval. Several players left during the January transfer window as relegation became increasingly likely, and that exodus has continued this summer with several experienced figures also moving on.

Relegation battle

Ynyshir Albions, who finished second from bottom last season but still ended the campaign 13 points clear of Cwmbran Celtic, are the least fancied side in the division and the bookmakers’ favourites for relegation. They have also been weakened by the departure of striker Calum Salter, who has joined Llanelli Town.

Ardal South East champions Caerphilly Athletic, fresh from a second successive promotion, are widely tipped to go straight back down. Baglan Dragons, who have been written off before but often proved competitive, are also among those expected to struggle.

Just behind them are Pure Swansea, winners of the Ardal South West, who face a tough step up in quality. Interestingly, Pontardawe Town, under new management and play-off winners, are actually being tipped to finish above both of the promoted champions in what looks set to be a tightly contested lower half of the table.
