The Cymru South travel picture highlights a league that, while officially regional, is shaped by a clear west–east geography that significantly affects weekly journeys.

Clubs compete in the same division, but South Wales is far from uniform. The league stretches from the west Wales coast all the way across the M4 corridor and deep into the Valleys, creating a noticeable imbalance in travel demand depending on where a club is based.

Aberystwyth Town stand out as the division’s clear extreme travellers. Their position on the mid-west coast of Wales means almost every away fixture involves a long cross-country journey into South Wales. Over a season, this produces the highest cumulative mileage in the league by a significant margin, with regular two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half-hour trips becoming the norm rather than the exception.

At the opposite end, clubs based in the Caerphilly area benefit from one of the most compact travel profiles in Welsh semi-professional football. Caerphilly Athletic and Trethomas Bluebirds share a ground, and their central south-east position means most opponents are within a relatively short driving distance. Their season is characterised by frequent sub-hour journeys, with even the furthest away trips remaining comparatively manageable.

Elsewhere, the Cardiff, Newport and Valleys clubs sit in a broadly central band. Teams such as Pontypridd United, Cardiff Draconians and Caerau Ely benefit from being positioned close to the M4 and A470 corridors, giving them relatively balanced travel in all directions. They still make the occasional long trip west, but their average mileage is moderated by strong clustering in south-east Wales.

Further west, the Swansea and Port Talbot corridor introduces a more mixed profile. Clubs such as Pure Swansea, Afan Lido, Baglan Dragons and Pontardawe Town sit in a transitional zone where travel is heavily influenced by regular journeys east into Cardiff and Newport, but also softened by proximity to one another within the Swansea Bay area.

On average, a Cymru South club is likely to travel around 1,400–1,600 road miles across its 15 away league fixtures in a season, equating to roughly 95–105 miles per away trip (round-trip basis varies significantly by opponent). However, this average masks a strong structural gradient across the league.

  • Newport City benefit from one of the most strategically central east Wales locations, reducing average journey length despite occasional long trips west.
  • Aberystwyth Town are the only club whose shortest away trip is still a significant journey. Even their nearest league opponent is around 40 miles away, highlighting just how isolated they are geographically.
