The Ardal South East presents one of the most geographically compact travel profiles in Welsh football, yet even within a relatively small area, there are clear differences in the mileage faced by clubs over the course of a season.

Although all sixteen clubs are based within south-east Wales, the league stretches from the eastern edge of Monmouthshire to the Brecon Beacons and from the upper Valleys down to the Severn Estuary. The result is a competition where travel is generally manageable, but where geography still creates distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Brecon Corries are the league’s most isolated club and, consequently, the division’s biggest travellers. Situated on the northern fringe of the league, every away fixture requires a journey south or east, with regular trips to Newport, Caldicot and Chepstow exceeding an hour each way. Over the course of fifteen away matches, they are expected to accumulate by far the highest road mileage in the division.

Abergavenny Town and Tredegar Town also occupy relatively peripheral positions. Both clubs face frequent journeys into the Newport and Monmouthshire corridor, while also travelling to Brecon, making their cumulative mileage noticeably higher than most of the league. Although not as extreme as Brecon, their travel commitment remains among the heaviest in the competition.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Newport and Cwmbran cluster enjoys one of the most favourable travel profiles in Welsh football. Clubs such as Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran Celtic, Cwmbran Town, Newport Corinthians and Lliswerry are located within just a few miles of one another, meaning a significant proportion of their away programme consists of journeys of less than twenty minutes. Their central location also keeps the longer trips to the Valleys and Monmouthshire within reasonable limits.

Unlike leagues that span the length of the country, the Ardal South East is characterised by a dense concentration of clubs around Newport and Cwmbran, meaning the majority of away fixtures can be completed comfortably within an hour’s drive. Even so, the league still exhibits a clear north-west to south-east travel gradient, with clubs on the geographical fringes consistently facing the greatest logistical demands throughout the season.
