Wrexham enjoyed the perfect UEFA Women’s Champions League debut as they defeated Armenian champions FC Pyunik.

Pyunik entered the fixture having won all 18 of their matches last season, but their unbeaten run came to an end as the Red Dragons made the most of home advantage at the Racecourse Ground.

Jenny Sugarman’s side battled back from behind after Susanna Badalyan opened the scoring, with Katie Barker restoring parity moments later. Lili Mai Jones then stunned the home crowd with a spectacular strike before Ava Suckley sent Wrexham into dreamland with a third.

Luiza Ghazaryan responded immediately for Pyunik, setting up a tense finish, but summer signing Natasha Thomas showed great determination to secure victory for the hosts and book their place in Saturday’s final against Riga.

Picking up the ball deep inside the Pyunik half, Knox glided past multiple defenders before producing a perfectly weighted pass for Katie Barker, who applied the finishing touch from close range. She didn’t stop there. Knox continued to torment the visitors in the second half embarking on another dazzling run before seeing an audacious chipped effort drift narrowly wide as Wrexham searched for a winner.

Since arriving from Bolton Wanderers, the former Wales Under-19 international has quickly become one of Wrexham’s key attacking outlets, and her display against FC Pyunik underlined exactly why.
