‘Once in a lifetime’ – Longford Town target Welsh Cup Shock against Caldicot Town

Longford Town will be hoping to write another chapter in their club’s history when they make the trip to face Caldicot Town in the First Qualifying Round of the Welsh Cup on Friday night.

The Neath-based side, who compete in the Neath & District League Division Two, face a daunting test against Ardal South East outfit Caldicot at Jubilee Way, with four divisions separating the two clubs. But with both teams kicking off their competitive campaigns, cup football has a habit of producing surprises.

Longford earned promotion after winning the Neath League Division Three title last season, while Caldicot narrowly missed out on the Ardal South East play-offs, finishing fourth and just seven points adrift of the promotion places. Despite the difference in league status, Longford will relish the opportunity to test themselves against higher-level opposition.

This season’s Welsh Cup is a historic one, with a record 284 clubs entering the competition. For goalkeeper James Donnelly, the occasion represents a proud moment for both the club and the local community, with Longford preparing to take their place in one of Welsh football’s most prestigious competitions.

Competing in the Welsh Cup is a landmark occasion for the club, and with a record number of teams entering this season’s competition, Donnelly says everyone is relishing the opportunity to be part of Welsh football history.

The prospect of travelling to face established Ardal League side Caldicot Town is one the squad is eagerly anticipating, both for the challenge on the pitch and the chance to experience a new club and community.

“Absolutely, we are all very excited,” Donnelly said.

“We all watched the draw in our clubhouse, and to have the chance to have an away day against a well-established Ardal League club is once in a lifetime for a club like ours.”

“It brings great pride to the club to be part of this prestigious competition, to have a small community club from Neath in a national competition and playing against much bigger clubs is exciting for us all in the club and community.”

Caldicot Town vs Longford – A tie to keep an eye on

Despite the four-division gap between the sides, Donnelly insists the squad is embracing the challenge rather than feeling overawed. While acknowledging Caldicot Town’s status as favourites, he believes his side can make life difficult if they produce the level of performance they know they’re capable of.

He said: “I still think there is pressure to put in a good performance and we all believe if we play our game we can definitely cause Caldicot a problem or two.”

Having represented several clubs across South Wales, including former Welsh Cup finalists Port Talbot Town, as well as Ely Rangers and Baglan Dragons, he believes the experience he gained higher up the football pyramid has been invaluable, both in his own development and in helping those around him.

“I have good memories of playing for Port Talbot, Ely Rangers and Baglan,” he said.

“I enjoyed my time with those clubs and got nothing but good things to say about them! I feel my experience with higher clubs definitely helps out the players, and I like to pass my experience on, especially to the other goalkeepers and younger players so they can try to make themselves better players.”
