Caernarfon’s Nine-Goal Rout: Three Red Cards and Four Talking Points

Caernarfon Town produced a ruthless second-half display as they swept aside Cambrian United 9-1 in a remarkable Cymru Premier encounter.

Cambrian had made the brighter start and took the lead through Ashley Evans, who flicked a set-piece into the corner. Caernarfon responded through Zack Clarke, who brought the hosts level before Mendes completed the turnaround.

Clarke reaches double digits for the season

Zack Clarke continued his excellent scoring form by taking his tally to 10 goals in 10 games this season.

The forward had gone two games without finding the net, but ended that run by scoring Caernarfon’s first goal of the game.

Clarke was also involved in another goal, providing the assist for Adrian Cieślewicz as Caernarfon’s attack eventually ran riot.

It represents Clarke’s best goalscoring start for several seasons. In 2023-24, he scored 12 goals in 32 appearances, but has already moved within two goals of that total with 22 fewer games played.

Before this match, Clarke had been particularly important to Caernarfon’s attacking output, scoring in five of their previous eight matches.

A chaotic first half changed the game

The match had already been an eventful contest before Caernarfon pulled away. Cambrian took the lead from a set-piece, but Caernarfon recovered to turn the game around, then came the major flashpoint.

Caernarfon goalkeeper Connor Roberts and Cambrian’s Josh Beecher were both shown red cards following a scuffle, with Liam Eason and Ryan Sears also receiving yellow cards as tensions boiled over.

Clarke had been the major source of goals earlier in the season, but this was a performance in which players across the team contributed.

Clarke was involved again as Caernarfon continued to press. He drove down the right from halfway and into the box, with his initial pass towards Edwards blocked. The ball rebounded into the path of Canavan, who calmly tapped home.

Caernarfon were awarded a penalty after a lengthy five-minute wait, with Sion Bradley stepping up to send Kelland Absalom the wrong way from the spot.

Matty Jones then won possession brilliantly and found Zack Clarke, who laid the ball off to Adrian Cieślewicz. The midfielder made no mistake, firing into the net as Caernarfon continued to pull away.

Ryan Sears added another with a superb left-footed effort from outside the box, finding the bottom-right corner.

There was further chaos inside the Cambrian box as a scramble eventually saw the ball fall to Noah Edwards, who kept his composure to convert into an empty net.

Matty Jones then got in on the action, arriving at the back post to finish off a brilliant looping delivery from Harri Wyn.

Wyn was involved again for the final goal, sending another dangerous ball into the middle for Zanzala to meet with a powerful header and bring the scoring to a close

Davies used his substitutes aggressively, replacing his attacking trio with three fresh forwards. Those replacements helped in the attack as the home side scored a further four goals. It was a ruthless second-half performance and one that will have caught the attention of the rest of the Cymru Premier.

What could Cambrian have done after going down to nine?

There is no question that Cambrian faced an extremely difficult task once they were reduced to nine players.

They had led the match and had been competitive before the red cards, but after Caernarfon moved 4-1 ahead before the hour mark, the challenge became one of limiting the damage.

The question for Cambrian was whether a more defensive approach could have restricted Caernarfon’s opportunities.
