Some Cymru Premier grounds are just a short walk from a massive Tesco, while one club is around 10km away

Some things matter on a football matchday: the result, the atmosphere, the pies and, perhaps more importantly than anyone would care to admit, how close you are to a big Tesco. For fans of Wales’ top-flight clubs, the answer varies considerably.

We have ranked all 16 Cymru Premier clubs by their proximity to what shoppers might call a “big Tesco” – meaning a Tesco Extra or Tesco Superstore. Find your local ‘big’ Tesco here.

The term “big Tesco” has become a familiar bit of UK shopping slang for a supermarket, particularly the out-of-town stores where you can seemingly buy everything from a loaf of bread to a television.

And while supermarkets might not be the first thing supporters think about when heading to a football ground, their proximity can make a difference to those grabbing supplies before a game, picking up a quick meal or simply looking for somewhere familiar to stop.

Caernarfon Town are closest to a big Tesco

At the top of the list in the Cymru Premier is Caernarfon Town, with the club just 0.26km from the Tesco South Road Superstore.

That means the distance is only around 260 metres – close enough for the supermarket to be a very realistic part of a matchday trip.

Airbus UK Broughton are next, with Tesco Extra Broughton Chester just 0.48km away, while Ammanford are also comfortably inside the one-kilometre mark at 0.54km from Ammanford Superstore.

Holywell Town complete the four clubs with a Tesco less than 1km away, with Holywell Superstore just 0.68km from the club.

That gives four Cymru Premier sides a “big Tesco” within a kilometre of their ground.

The average club is less than 4km from a big Tesco

Across all 16 Cymru Premier clubs, the average distance to a Tesco Extra or Superstore is 3.93km.

That figure is perhaps a little misleading, though, because the list has some very close supermarkets and a handful of much more distant ones.

Half of the clubs are within 2.88km of a big Tesco, while eight are more than 3km away.

At the other end of the scale, Cambrian United are the furthest away, at around 10km from Aberdare Superstore.

The New Saints are next at 9.54km, meaning the gap between the closest club and the furthest is almost 9.75km.

That is quite a difference if your matchday routine involves stocking up before kick-off.

Three clubs share the same big Tesco

There is also an interesting geographical quirk in the list.

Three Cymru Premier clubs Connah’s Quay Nomads, Flint Town United and Holywell Town, are all linked to the same Holywell Superstore.

Holywell Town are naturally much closer at just 0.68km, while both Connah’s Quay Nomads and Flint Town United are listed at 6.80km.

It means supporters of three different clubs can technically have the same “big Tesco” in their matchday calculations – although their journeys to get there are rather different.

There is a similar North Wales connection for Colwyn Bay and Llandudno, with the former listed at 7.55km from Abergele Superstore and the latter 3.86km from Llandudno Junction Superstore.

So, who has the ultimate big Tesco matchday?

If proximity is the only thing that matters, Caernarfon Town sit at the top of this particular table.

Their 0.26km distance works out at just 260 metres, making it by far the shortest trip among the clubs listed.

At the other end, Cambrian United’s 10km distance is nearly 38 times Caernarfon’s. But there is another way of looking at it.

With the average Cymru Premier club sitting 3.93km from a big Tesco, there is a surprisingly wide range across the league – from supermarkets that are virtually on the doorstep to those requiring a considerably longer journey.

So whether you’re after a pre-match meal, forgotten supplies or simply fancy a wander, the distance to a big Tesco could be another unofficial metric for judging a Welsh football ground.
